Jerry Lewis called back to host muscular dystrophy telethon

Daniel S Levine

Back in May, legendary comedian Jerry Lewis announced that he would no longer be acting as the host of the Muscular Dystrophy Association Labor Day telethon, but in a stunning reversal, the MDA announced overnight that Lewis will be called back.

The reversal was stunning, according to the Las Vegas Review-Journal, because it was only two weeks ago that it was confirmed that he was not supposed to be hosting.

Initially, the MDA said that Lewis would only make a short appearance so that he could sing “You’ll Never Walk Alone,” according to ABC. Lewis would also remain the association’s national chairman.

Lewis, who has hosted the telethon since 1966, also received a lifetime achievement award from the Nevada Broadcasters Association on Saturday. At the reception, he made no statement on the reversal, according to FoxNews.

Instead, he focused on the work he had done in the past, saying that “...saving lives is a very, very special project in the life of any man who wants to do that, but I have had the joy of ... extending my life by what I feel in my heart.”
