When Jerry Springer the Opera was first announced years ago, the British production faced many skeptical fans.
Now a success and a hit in London, where it originated, the opera has a two-night run at Carnegie Hall starring Harvey Keitel as Springer and directed by Avenue Q's Jason Moore. A two-disc live recording of the score is available, and a Broadway transfer was announced in 2005.
As reported by The New York Times, Carnegie's "Jerry Springer's" moment is a criminally short one. Nonetheless, there has been talk of moving it to Broadway, although it will be a hard show to produce, as Broadway theatergoers are famously conservative these days.
