Jessica Alba launches The Honest Company

This Tuesday, Jessica Alba will launch The Honest Company, which sells eco-friendly and toxic-free baby products.

The company, Honest.com;will sell diapers, baby wipes, body care and cleaning products.

Alba named the company after her three-year-old daughter Honor. After having her second daughter, Haven, in 2011, Alba noticed that toxic chemicals are commonly used in everyday products.

“I would buy what I thought was like an eco-brand and pay out the wazoo for it and then find out that it was made with the same ingredients as any other brand,” said Alba, according to the Huffington Post. “But the packaging is a little more biodegradable and you’re like- but I care about the product touching my kid. Is that ok?”

CNN reported that Alba noticed that most laundry detergents made for babies gave her a rash and caused her to sneeze.

“If it had that effect on me, I didn’t want to use it anywhere near my infant daughter,” she said.

Alba also found that there are many studies that suggest there is a link between the chemicals that are found in many of these household products and diseases such as cancer, ADHD, and asthma.

For Alba, her business endeavor is more nerve racking than the opening of one of her new movies. She has come up with the idea on her own and had to put all of the products in the company together by scratch.

“From the packaging to the bottles to the product that’s inside..” Alba said. “All of that is really from me.”

When the company opens, it will begin sales with two family bundle packs. One family essentials pack that has five main family cleaning products, and a diaper bundle pack that will contain biodegradable diapers to last a month.

Alba hopes to make her products affordable for families. According to The Huffington Post, Alba will be donating a portion of each sale to Baby2Baby, which provides baby clothing for families in need.

Alba also hopes her new line of baby products will help increase support for the Safe Chemicals Act, that if passes, will require all products to be tested for harmful chemicals before being sold.
