Jeter Wins Gold Glove; 4th of his career
Rawlings has announced the winners of their annual Gold Glove award and Yankees shortstop Derek Jeter has one more piece of hardware to add to his collection.
The Yankee captain won his fourth career Gold Glove on Tuesday, naming him the best defensive shortstop in the American League this year.
Many of have been skeptical of Jeter's fielding ability as of late, specifically his lack of range. One group, the Fielding Bible, went as far as to call Derek Jeter of the worst defensive shortstops in Major League Baseball.
"I will be absolutely astonished if there is any other shortstop in major league history whose Relative Range Factors are anywhere near as bad as Jeter's," said Bill James of the Fielding Bible awards. "He is not a Gold Glove quality shortstop. He isn't an average defensive shortstop."
Jeter has taken home a number of awards this year, including the Roberto Clemente Award for excellence on the field and in the community, and the Hank Aaron Award as the AL's top hitter, the second in his career.
Jeter was tied for fewest errors in the American League (8) with Cesar Izturis of Baltimore. However, Jeter played in 38 more games than Izturis did.
Other winners in the Al include: Mark Buehrle (P), Joe Mauer (C), Mark Teixera (1B), Placido Polanco (2B), Even Longoria (3B), Torii Hunter, Adam Jones and Ichiro Suzuki (OF's).
The National League winners will be announced on Wednesday.
