Jewish Rapper, Next Hit on ITunes

Laura Anderson
Asher Roth, the unlikeliest of hood rappers, made it to No. 1 on iTunes, Monday.

The 23-year-old from Bucks County, Pa. is from nowhere near the hood. Regardless, the talented rhymer made a huge hit and it paid off, according to the Philadelphia Inquirer.

Roth's debut album, Asleep in the Bread Aisle rose straight to the top. He became famous for his song, "I Love College," which was inspired by his experience at West Chester University.

Aside from his upper-middle class background, the fact that Roth is white sets him apart from most mainstream rappers. Living the good life doesn't exactly give him the usual material for his beat.

"For successful white rappers in the mainstream, the reference points are Slim and none," Roth said, making a wry reference to another white rapper, Eminem.

Instead of rapping about the hard times growing up, Roth takes a more satirical approach to life through his music. "I Love College," which Roth calls "satire at its finest," has sold almost a million copies and has been streamed more than 36 million times on his Myspace page.

He is rising hot and fast, a new star that is unlike any other.
