Joaquin Phoenix is no stranger to odd behavior, as anyone who saw his appearance on David Letterman last year could recall. Phoenix showed up to the show, unshaven and not put together – mumbling through the entire interview. This was following the announcement he made in 2008, claiming he was retiring from acting to instead, focus on his hip-hop singing career.
For the last year Phoenix has flown under the radar rather well. Earlier this month, paparazzi even remarked that they had not photographed the Oscar nominated actor in nearly a year. However, we now have photographic proof that Phoenix is alive and well– and he’s found time to shave.
This morning, Phoenix unexpectedly appeared in a video for the cause To Write Love on Her Arms, an organization aimed at suicide prevention. Joining him in the video are Miley Cyrus, Liv Tyler, and TWLOHA founder Jamie Tworkowski. TWLOHA is competing to win an online contest for a $1 million grant to help suicide prevention.
In the video, Tworkowski tries to wrangle Phoenix into doing a public service announcement. After a few seconds of awkward silence, Phoenix responds.
"It should be entertaining and fun and not just a [public service announcement]," Phoenix says. "I don't know who that person would be, though. I don't have any friends."
Just then, Miley Cyrus pops in and then explains to Phoenix how he can vote for TWLOHA in the contest. Phoenix then tries to relay the information to Tyler, and again Cyrus pops in to explain the voting process.
The entire video is light-hearted, created in good fun for a good cause.
