Joe Satriani Suing Coldplay
Guitarist Joe Satriani is suing Coldplay for copyright infringement, claiming Coldplay's hit song, "Viva La Vida," uses part of his 2004 instrumental song, "If I Could Fly," from the Is There Love in Space? album, according to BBC News. Satriani wants a jury trial, and he is seeking damages and "any and all profits" for plagiarism.
"Viva La Vida" is the first single from Coldplay's Viva La Vida or Death and All His Friends album. The track is credited to singer Chris Martin, bass player Guy Berryman, guitarist Johnny Buckland, and drummer Will Champion. The title was taken from a painting by Mexican artist Frida Kahlo.
Satriani is not the only band claiming "Viva La Vida." MTV reports that New York band Creaky Boards is accusing Coldplay of copying their song, "The Songs I Didn't Write," saying Chris Martin went to their concert and heard the song. Coldplay's spokesman denied Martin was at the show.
Coldplay was recently nominated for seven Grammy awards, including song of the year for the allegedly plagiaristic song. Coldplay could not be reached for comment.
