Joseph Gordon-Levitt to Star in Cancer Comedy

“3rd Rock from the Sun” alum Joseph Gordon--Levitt has been cast as the replacement for fellow actor James McAvoy in an as-yet-untitled comedy focusing on the deadly disease known as cancer.

(500) Days of Summer star Joseph Gordon- Levitt has been tapped to replace James McAvoy in the Summit Entertainment and Mandate Pictures as-yet-untitled cancer comedy.

According to an article on HollywoodReporter.com, “Summit said McAvoy left the project, which begins filming Monday in Vancouver, ‘due to unrelated circumstances beyond his control.’ Neither the film company nor the actor's reps offered any further explanation.’”

This autobiographical tale, which was written by Will Reiser, follows a man living with cancer. Gordon-Levitt’s co-stars include Seth Rogan, Anna Kendrick, Bryce Dallas Howard, Anjelica Huston and Philip Baker Hall.

Jonathan Levine will be helming the project while the producing duties will be left to Rogan, Evan Goldberg and Ben Karlin. Reiser will be the project’s showrunner along with Mandate Pictures president Nathan Kahane.

"It's incredibly unfortunate that circumstances outside of everyone's control have taken James away from the project, but, with James' blessing, we were able to have Joseph step in to take on the role of Adam," Rogen said. "We all look forward to working with James in the future."

Gordon-Levitt’s past credits include the 1998 horror film Halloween H20: 20 Years Later, the 1999 comedy 10 Things I Hate About You, being a cast member on the hit NBC science fiction sitcom 3rd Rock from the Sun and the 2009 action film G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra.
