Filming began in May in Shreveport. Brolin is to play President Bush and Wright plays his former Secretary of State, Colin Powell. Elizabeth Banks plays Laura Bush, Ellen Burstyn and James Cromwell play the elder Bushes and Thandie Newton plays Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice, according to AP.

W. is Stone's third presidential film, following Nixon and JFK. He was also director of Born on the Fourth of July as well as Platoon. The director has quickly gotten the attenction of investors in Hollywood and told AP that the film is to focus on the life and presidency of Bush. He said it is to be "a fair, true portrait of the man. How did Bush go from being an alcoholic bum to the most powerful figure in the world?"
