Judge Denies Polanski's Request to Dismiss Sex Indictment
Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Peter Espinoza denied director Roman Polanski's request to dismiss a 1978 sex case against him. Polanski, 75, fled to France after pleading guilty for unlawfully having sex with a 13-year-old girl.
Espinoza stated he would not even consider the case until Polanski personally appeared in his court. Afraid of arrest however, the director's lawyers stated that Polanski would not be returning to the United States, according to Reuters.
Polanski's attorneys also plan to appeal Espinoza's decision, arguing that there is substantial proof of misconduct by the original prosecutors and that the judge is denying the director the right to a fair trial.
According to Reuters, the teenage girl involved with the case, now living in Hawaii and a mother to three, believes Polanski has done enough time.
The Oscar-winning 75-year-old won best director for the 2002 film "The Pianist," and is also recognized for films, including "Rosemary" and "Chinatown."
