Just Between Us Girls
Now that we're alone, we can talk. I mean, really talk. You know, girl talk. It's about what we women really feel about ourselves, our men, our families, our friends, our money, our lives, and our life's work. Some of us have "jobs" -- some of us have "careers." Some of us even feel we have a "calling" to our life's work. Our life's work may be the roles we play in other people's lives -- wife, mother, daughter, community member, etc. Our life's work may be defined by our education and training, or by who writes us a paycheck. Our life's work may be some form of artistic expression, or volunteer work. Many of us have more than one life's work -- and we juggle them as best we can, or trade one off for another at different points in our lives.
We sometimes get that uneasy feeling that we're "living lives of quiet desperation" -- or we glance in the mirror, and with an involuntary gasp, realize that despite our childhood vows, we are turning into our mothers! The years fly by so quickly, and we sometimes lose touch with the dreams we dreamed as girls about who we would be when we became women.
But deep inside every one of us, there is a savvy, sassy woman -- a woman in touch with her own power, if only for brief moments. The savvy woman in us reminds us how much influence we have in the world, and in other people's lives, because we sometimes forget. And the sassy woman in each of us knows that we are invincible -- when we tap into our strength, intelligence and courage, we can be anything we want to be.
Savvy, sassy women, this column is for you! My name is BJ Gallagher and I'll be writing Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays on topics of interest to you - love and relationships, men, money, work, families, popular culture, self care, women's health and body image, sex, and anything else that is important to you. I'm looking forward to having fun with you and with this column.
Here's my favorite quote for the day:
"To the ancient Chinese curse 'May you live in interesting times,' we can add the feminist hex 'May you live with unlimited options,' and when they present themselves, just say 'yes.' Losing your mind is a small price to pay for an interesting life."
