Kansas House Speaker Mike O’Neal was caught with his foot in his mouth after he forwarded an unflattering email to fellow Republicans referring to First Lady Michelle Obama as “Mrs. YoMama.”
Sent from his personal email account, The Lawrence Journal-World reports the email also included a picture of a wind-swept Obama being compared to that of the Grinch, the green Dr. Seuss character in the cartoon of the same name. O’Neal reportedly added to the caption, “I’ve had worse hair days.” The subject line of the email was “twins separated at birth?”
Controversy has surrounded Mrs. Obama during her husband’s time in office over what some deem unnecessary spending of tax-payer dollars during tough economic times. The recent Obama family Christmas vacation to Hawaii was no exception. O’Neal’s email also included a pun about the getaway saying, “I'm sure you'll join me in wishing Mrs. YoMama a wonderful, long Hawaii Christmas vacation — at our expense, of course.”
When O’Neal’s Democratic colleagues got wind of the email, they were quick to chastise his remarks. Joan Wagnon, Kansas Democratic Party Chairwoman said, “Regardless of how he feels about President Obama’s politics, Speaker O’Neal’s decision to promote language demeaning Mrs. Obama is simply wrong,”
Wagnon went on to say that O’Neal’s comments were “highly offensive, disrespectful and unacceptable.” After the email hit the press, O’Neal made an apology to Mrs. Obama saying his email was supposed to be funny but he missed the text that followed the pictures and for that he was sorry.
Do you think O’Neal’s apology was enough?
