Kanye Kills Killers and Ruins Roses with Album Sales
His new album might be called 808s and Heartbreak, but Kanye West can't be feeling brokenhearted over the record's sales.
E! reports that the album sold 450,000 copies in its first week, which ended up being almost 200,000 more records sold than another new album that came out last week. Guns N' Roses' Chinese Democracy sold around 261,000 copies. The album was sold exclusively at Best Buy.
A reason for the lackluster sales of Chinese Democracy could be that artists like West, Ludacris, and the Killers are all on the same record label. Island Def Jam released their three discs one day early, on Monday, instead of the usual Tuesday, in order to get a head start on the sales week.
Ludacris's Theater of Mind hit No. 5 with 213,000 albums sold. Day & Age, by the Killers, debuted at No. 6, selling 193,000 copies.
Taylor Swift and her album, Fearless, held on at No. 2, while Beyonce's I Am . . . Sasha Fierce slipped to No. 4. Swift sold 267,000 and Beyonce sold 257,000 copies.
Another debut last week was Barry Manilow's The Greatest Songs of the Eighties, which came in at No. 14.
