Kanye vs. Taylor, a VMA disaster

Kanye west steals the spotlight from Taylor Swift's win during MTV VMAs.

MTV VMAs red carpet arrivals

The MTV Video Music Awards aired yesterday, and fans and celebrities alike are still buzzing about the insensitive and asinine move Kanye West pulled early on during the show.

After a heartfelt introduction by Madonna and a high-energy Michael Jackson tribute featuring the late singer's sister, Janet, Kanye West quickly put a damper on the evening during the first award presentation of the night, Best Female Video.

Taylor Swift, 19, took the award for her video, "You Belong with Me," and was visibly excited and humbled to be honored. As she took the stage to accept her award, she had barely gotten through a sentence when West took the microphone out of her hands and announced that Beyonce, another contender for the award with her video for "Single Ladies (Put a Ring On It)," had deserved to win instead.

Kanye left the stage to the sounds of booing and yelling, while Swift stood holding her award in silent shock. West was kicked out of Radio City Music Hall, but the audience did not soon forget his actions. Celebrities took to their Twitters and several did not hold back while commenting in anger about West's rude behavior, and expressing sympathy and support for Taylor Swift.

Thankfully, Beyonce helped to rectify the situation with class and tact. When she won the evening's biggest award, Video of the Year, she gracefully stepped out of the spotlight and handed the microphone over to Taylor Swift to let her finish her interrupted speech.

Today, Kanye West wrote an apology to Swift on his personal blog, stating, "That was Taylor's moment and I had no right in any way to take it from her. I am truly sorry." The online apology seems a little trite for the amount of anger it produced, but at least Kanye showed some remorse for his idiocy.
