Katherine Heigl Takes a Break from "Grey's Anatomy"

Katherine Heigl will be taking a leave of absence from "Grey's Anatomy" to film the romantic comedy, "Life As We Know It."

Katherine Heigl will be taking a welcome break from long hours on the set of "Grey's Anatomy."The actress will be taking a leave of absence from the show to film the Greg Berlanti-directed romantic comedy, "Life As We Know It," confirmed Ausiello of EW.com.

Although ABC and "Grey's Anatomy" producers have accommodated Heigl's filming schedule, this is the first time she has been given a leave of absence.

Heigl will be missing five episodes. Ausiello revealed that Heigl's absence will be explained on screen.

Her leave of absence most likely will coincide with Ellen Pompeo's maternity leave and follow T. R. Knight's exit from the show.

Shonda Rimes, executive producer and writer of "Grey's Anatomy," told Ausiello, "Eventually, everybody is going to leave the show. . . . So we're looking at [ways] we can mess with the structure now. . . . Season 6 is about finding the longevity of the show and figuring out if there is a future for this show beyond these characters."

So what will Seattle Grace be like without Izzie, Meredith, and George?
