Actress Katie Holmes is filing a $50 million libel lawsuit against Star Magazine after the drug addiction claim on the magazine’s cover of the January issue came out.
The headline read: “ADDICTION NIGHTMARE—Katie DRUG SHOCKER!—The Real Reason She Can’t Leave Tom.”
However, the article wasn’t about an actual addiction to coke or Oxycontin, or anything like that.
According to Business Insider , the Star story alleged that Holmes is hooked on a device called Scientology e-meter, which is a device that is used to measure and adjust a person's resistance and conductance of electricity.
The article quoted ex-Scientology members on the harmful effects of the e-meter.
The magazine is sticking to its story and is preparing for a fight.
The lawsuit states that “[Holmes] has no intention of leaving her husband, and is not prevented from doing so by any drug addiction.”
"Star Magazine's malicious claims about Katie are untrue, unethical and unlawful,” Holmes’ attorney tells TMZ . “Not only do they cruelly defame Katie, they play a cheap trick on the public, making ridiculously false claims on the cover unsupported by anything inside."
Holmes is looking for $50 million in damages.
