Katy Perry Takes a Vow of Celibacy
Katy Perry began 2009 by breaking up with her boyfriend and apparently is following it up with a vow of celibacy, reports MTV News. During the holiday season in December, Perry and the Gym Class Heroes frontman, Travis McCoy, went their separate ways after about a year of dating. McCoy was upfront about the split from the beginning, writing in his blog, "My Laptop is my new b****. LOYAL. LISTENS. and NEVER LET'S ME DOWN."
Perry managed to address the issue more gracefully by confessing to a crowd at one of her concerts in Los Angeles, "When you break up with someone, you move on. You don't really want to move on...but you have to because they don't give you any choice. But I'm over it!" More recently, she wrote on her website that she feels people are reading too much into her words and she does not want to talk about her relationships. "I have made many of the same introductions before...just lately everyone's dissecting my every word. Understandable," She wrote. "When I wanna share something with the world, the world will know...otherwise, stop looking for a story, or an explanation."
Earlier this month, when asked about the break up at the Critic's Choice Awards, Perry vaguely responded, "Well it's a new year, and I'm very focused. I have a tour coming up on January 23 called the Hello Katy Tour, and I'm putting all my energy and efforts into that."
She was not exaggerating. According to US Weekly, the "I Kissed a Girl" singer has taken a vow of celibacy.
"I've actually taken a vow of celibacy this year," the singer told TV Guide. "No kissing anyone. Just my cat, Kitty Purry."
While this news may be good for Perry's mother, who, according to Straight.com, believes her daughter has been led astray and that the single "I Kissed a Girl" is "shameful and disgusting," but it could be bad news for Perry's CD sales. In 2001, she released a Christian-pop CD under her real name, Katy Hudson. That effort failed and the burgeoning star changed her name and image to Katy Perry, the "I Kissed a Girl" singer.
"It's sad, but they were fighting a lot in recent months because they never saw each other." A friend of Perry told My Park Magazine about how the singer's recent fame caused stress in the relationship. "When somebody becomes very famous very quickly their relationship usually suffers. She's going through such a huge time at the moment so she needs to be on her own."
Hopefully Perry's celibacy will help her to avoid the breakdown that many successful artists go through.
