Keep Up With World Cup On Your Cell Phone

Ellen Wernecke
First World Cup in which 3G technology will allow soccer -- or football -- fans to watch anywhere. So who needs to go to Germany, anyway?

You can stand in Munich or Nuremberg and get splashed with beer by overeager fans, or you could just keep up on the train -- or in the doctor's office, or in bed, or even in school!

New mobile 3G technology will allow World Cup fans the world over to watch their team of choice in the quadrennial (that is, every four years) competition, beginning Friday the 9th in host country Germany.

Since 2002's edition, hosted by Japan and Korea, which attracted 1.1 billion viewers for the Brazil-Germany finale, cell phone technology has moved forward at such a speed that video updates -- available in 2002 only in Japan to 250,000 subscribers, according to the Hollywood Reporter -- are practically a given for fans everywhere.

Naturally, there's something to be said about watching one of these exciting matches live Germany -- and that's not just the lager and wurst talking! But if you haven't already made reservations, why not splurge on a new phone for your team?
