Kerry Does Comedy?
It seems obvious that an appearance of Democratic presidential nominee John Kerry on Comedy Central's "The Daily Show" is more exciting to young voters than a John Kerry stint on a real cable news show. So, last Tuesday, Kerry made his way to Jon Stewart's oversized couch and allowed the faux reporter to made a joke of his campaigning in the name of getting Kerry's image out to younger, less politically-minded viewers.
The appearance, much like Bill Clinton's saxophone moment on the Arsenio Hall Show, allowed Kerry to have a quick laugh with the audience and get to the punch line before the public could wonder what he was doing there.
Though The Globe and Mail contends, "John Kerry can't do comedy," his personality act that the Globe calls the "bemused politician" might lighten American opinions of Kerry the person instead of Kerry the politician. According to USA Today, Kerry wanted to come off as a "regular guy" so he could reach younger viewers without answering the "tough questions."
Stewart, who GQ called, "The Voice of Reason," used his sardonic humor to tease and titillate Kerry and poke fun at Kerry's recent press regarding his military record.
"I understand that apparently you were never in Vietnam," joked Stewart, triggering laughter from both the audience and Kerry.
"That's what I understand too," reputed Kerry, "But I- I'm trying to figure out what happened!"
Viewers will have to wait until November to see if Kerry's comedy routine can win the election.
