Lady Gaga is no stranger to relying on controversial imagery for shock value, but her wheelchair-bound performance at the Sydney Town Hall in Australia on Wednesday drew an unfavorable reaction from concertgoers.

Gaga performed “Yoü and I” with her legs bound in a costume for her mermaid alter ego, Yuyi, as she rolled around in a wheelchair.

A group of angry fans responded when they spotted the singer outside a gay bar after the concert, tossing eggs that missed their target and struck members of her entourage.

Gaga has previously used a wheelchair as a prop in the music video for “Paparazzi,” in which she is carried to one by male dancers and pushed down the purple carpet. Mother Monster also used a wheelchair during her performance of “Paparazzi” at the 2009 MTV Video Music Awards.

Jesse Billauer, the founder and ambassador of quadriplegic advocacy group Life Rolls On, responded to the incident by releasing a statement to RadarOnline.com.

“Since this isn’t the first time she has used a wheelchair in her performances, I invite her to learn more about the 5.6 million Americans who live with paralysis,” he said. “They, like me, unfortunately, don’t use a wheelchair for shock value.”
