Lady Gaga Inspires Potentially Dangerous Fashion Trend

Circle lenses are illegal in the United States

In her music video for "Bad Romance," Lady Gaga sports a bug-eyed look that has since become quite popular, and fans are eager to re-create the look.

According to MTV.com, some fans have begun to seek out "circle lenses," which make the eyes appear bigger by covering parts of the iris, as well as the whites of eyes.

These lenses, however, are illegal in the United States, but people have resorted to ordering them online.

The fact that the lenses are illegal, can most likely by attributed to the health risks they pose. A recent statement was made to CNN by the American Optometric Association, that advised people against using the circle lenses, as well as other novelty lenses.

The statement reads, "Consumers who purchase lenses without a prescription or without consultation from an eye doctor put themselves at risk of serious bacterial infection, or even significant damage to the eye's ability to function, with the potential for irreversible sight loss."

Also, the hope to re-create Gaga's wide-eyed look is a rather unrealistic one, as according to the Times, the appearance of her eyes in the music video is computer-generated.
