Catholic organizations have issued complaints and threatened boycotts of the HBO show "Curb Your Enthusiasm" after Sunday's episode, wherein Larry David peed on a painting of Jesus Christ.
In this episode, the Seinfeld creator accidentally urinated on the painting, which made his Catholic assistant think that it was miraculously crying. The act has outraged the leaders of multiple Catholic organizations. Deal Hudson of InsideCatholic.com complained about David's repeated mockery of the Christian faith to Foxnews.com.
"Why is it that people are allowed to publicly show that level of disrespect for Christian symbols? If the same thing was done to a symbol of any other religions -- Jewish or Muslim -- there'd be a huge outcry. It's simply not a level playing field."
The president of the Catholic League also failed to find the humor in the episode, asking if David would find it funny if "someone urinated on a picture of his mother." He then said that HBO only makes fun of Catholics.
Village Voice reported on some more severe criticism of David and his show. The Conservative Gentleman commented that "Jews wonder why people around the world hate them, why they've been hated for thousands of years. Jews like Larry David are why." Michael Savage called David "an anti-Semite in Jew's clothing."
The Grey Morass has urged Christians to boycott HBO until they remove "Curb Your Enthusiasm: "Cancel your HBO and tell your cable provider you will not subscribe to the appropriate plan until they remove it from their package."
According to PopEater, HBO responded to the numerous complaints in a statement to Fox reminding everyone that anything David does is in the name of humor.
"Anyone who follows 'Curb Your Enthusiasm' knows that the show is full of parody and satire," said the network, "Larry David makes fun of everyone, most especially himself. The humor is always playful and certainly never malicious."
