Lead actors in 'Billy Elliot: The Musical' win Tony Award

Three young actors set two records at the Tony Awards on Sunday.

The three actors who played the title role in "Billy Elliot: The Musical" made history Sunday night at the Tony Awards when they won the award for best lead actor.

Trent Kowalik, 14, David Alvarez and Kiril Kulish, both 15, broke two records at the awards ceremony, which took place at Radio City Music Hall.

The boys are not only the youngest winners of the lead acting prize, they are also the first co-nominees in a musical to win, according to the Los Angeles Times.

Though they are the youngest actors to win lead actor, they are not the youngest overall, with Frankie Michaels winning the award for featured actor in a musical in 1996 when he was six weeks short of turning 11, and Daisy Eagan winning featured actress in a musical in 1991 at the age of 11 years, 7 months old.

After accepting their awards, Kowalik, Alvarez and Kulish thanked the people associated with the show "shyly," according to the Associated Press, before Kulish said to the crowd, "We want to say to all the kids out there who might want to dance, 'Never give up.'"

The New York Times reported that "Billy Elliot" did exceptionally well overall at the Tonys, winning 10 awards, including Best Director of a Musical and the award for Best Musical.
