Leif Garrett Arrested for Drug Possession
Troubled former teen actor/singer Leif Garrett was arrested on Monday in downtown Los Angeles for drug possession.
The 48-year-old was arrested around 11am, Monday morning, at a Metrolink train station and taken to jail before being released on Wednesday afternoon after posting bail, reports the Web site for the Los Angeles County Sheriff officers. His court date is February 25.
A spokesperson for the Sheriff’s department could not be reached for comment; however, a spokeswoman told E! Online that police officers patrolling the station spotted Garrett acting in a suspicious manner, prompting them to search him and find the unspecified drugs.
He began his career at the age of 5, and quickly skyrocketed to fame after starring in a number of major film and TV roles and having a few hit singles. However, Garrett made headlines in 1979 when he crashed his car – as a result of drunk driving – resulting in his best friend, Roland Winkler, the only passenger in the car with him, becoming a paraplegic. Twenty years later, in 1999, Garrett appeared on VH1’s Behind the Music and apologized to Winkler for the accident.
His recent arrest isn’t Garrett’s first run-in with the law for drug possession; after his career stalled, he struggled with substance abuse, and was arrested a few times in the process, once for a 2005 bust for cocaine possession. He allegedly violated his probation in that case, so a warrant was issued for his arrest in December 2005. He spent 90 days in jail.
In 2006, he was arrested on similar charges to his present one; at a train station he was stopped for riding without a ticket, and was subsequently arrested for possession of heroin and Quaaludes, a drug used to battle anxiety. He was sentenced to 90 days in prison.
In recent years, Garrett has tried to make a name for himself again, appearing on many celebrity-related reality shows, including Fear Factor and Ty Murray’s Celebrity Bull Riding Challenge.
