Letterman Extortionist Released from Jail

Robert Halderman was released from Rikers Island Thursday

Robert Joel Halderman, who tried to extort late-night show host David Letterman for $2 million, was released from jail Thursday, according to a city correctional department spokesman.

Halderman, a former producer on the CBS News show 48 Hours, attempted to extort Letterman over his affairs with women.

In March, Halderman pleaded guilty to attempted grand larceny, as part of a deal with the prosecutors in the case.

Following the plea, Halderman was sentenced to six months in a New York City jail. However, he was released two months early for good behavior.

Halderman threatened to expose both Letterman, and reveal details of his affairs with various women who were employed on The Late Show with David Letterman.

After the case became public in October, Letterman was forced to openly admit to the affairs on the show.

When Halderman pleaded guilty, he said he felt "great remorse" for what he had done, and apologized to Letterman.

Halderman must now complete 1,000 hours of community service.
