Lil Wayne Pleads Guilty and Faces One Year in Jail
Lil Wayne, who raps, "I got the gun right beside me, who don't?" in his song "Army Guns" admitted to gun possession in a Manhattan courtroom on Thursday.
The famous rapper pleaded guilty to attempted weapon possession in a trial that began at 10:05 a.m. on the morning of October 22, MTV News reports. When asked by the judge what type of gun it was that he had, Wayne replied, "A .40-caliber semi-automatic."
Twenty minutes after the short proceeding ended, Wayne stepped outside to a throng of waiting photographers and reporters. He did not provide answers for any of the questions they shouted out.
"What's up?" was the only reply Wayne offered.
The charge stems from a 2007 arrest that occurred after a concert in New York. Police claimed to see and smell marijuana smoke emitting from Wayne's tour bus, and proceeded to search the vehicle. In addition to illegally possessed marijuana, officers also found the weapon. Wayne stood by his "not guilty" plea until it became evident that DNA evidence linking him to the gun would be used in trial.
The plea bargain will place Wayne in jail for an expected one year, as opposed to three and a half years he could have potentially served if convicted.
Wayne's sentencing will be held in February 2010. Until that time, he is free on bail.
