Popular rapper Lil Wayne pled guilty on Thursday to having immediate access to a gun which he had no license for, which is likely to result in a sentence of one year in prison.
Wayne's lawyers have been fighting charges of illegal gun possession since July 2007, writes MTV.com. Since then, they've been arguing that the DNA evidence submitted by prosecutors was not acceptable. However, after learning that a guilty sentence handed down by a jury could get him 3 and a half to 7 years, he opted for the plea deal, which reduced the charges to attempted possession.
"After ongoing negotiations, he opted to take the deal to take responsibility for the situation and I think it speaks of him that he's an individual with a strong constitution that he took that responsibility," said Wayne's lawyer.
According to Newsday, New York police pulled Lil Wayne's bus over after a concert at the Beacon Theater because they saw and smelled marijuana smoke coming from the door just before it left. One of the officers claimed to have seen the rapper toss aside a bag containing a loaded handgun as he approached the back of the bus.
Wayne is also due to appear in an Arizona court for felony drug possession and weapons charges dating back in January 2008, writes The Associated Press. He was arrested on these charges at a U.S. Border Patrol checkpoint, and has pleaded not guilty to each of them.
