Little Azharuddin Ismail from "Slumdog Millionaire" to get a new home
When local authorities demolished Azharuddin Ismail's house in the slums, Danny Boyle flew to his rescue, BBC News reports. Boyle and the trust he has set up for the children who acted in "Slumdog Millionaire" helped buy little Ismail, who plays a young Jamal Malik in the movie, a house of his own.
"They were given access to a world, an extraordinary and glamorous world, and they understandably want their lives to be completely transformed," Boyle said about the children.
Boyle hopes that he can also soon buy a house for Rubina Ali, who plays a young Latika, before the advent of the monsoons in June.
The "Jai Ho Trust," as it is called, was set up by Boyle and producer Christian Colson after the success of "Slumdog," so that the child artists from the slums could benefit from it. They are planning to spend about $100,000 to buy the homes they have promised, even though Ali's father Rafiq Quereshi angrily stormed out on Boyle at their meeting.
"It has been five to six months," Rafiq Qureshi told the AP. "Everything is available in Mumbai if you have the money. If you really want to get us a house you can get us a house in two days."
