Lopez renews contract with Top Rank; will fight Mtagwa on Oct. 10
Juan Manuel Lopez (26-0, 24 KOs), an undefeated junior featherweight champion, has extended his contract with promoters Top Rank and will fight Rogers Mtagwa in a title bout on Oct. 10, according to ESPN.com.
The deal was announced Wednesday by Top Rank President Todd duBoef, making Lopez's bout with Mtagwa the headliner of the "Latin Fury" card at Madison Square Garden. The fight with Mtagwa, unfortunately, isn't expected to be too much of a challenge for Lopez; ESPN's article refers to Mtagwa as a "stepping stone" for Lopez, who hopes to land a future fight with WBA featherweight champion and Cuban prospect Yuriorkis Gamboa.
DuBoef, who expressed excitement over Top Rank's deal with Lopez, said, "There is a great lineage of Puerto Rico superstarsWilfredo Gomez, Tito Trinidad and Miguel Cotto. It's a pleasure that Juanma and Top Rank will work together to get him to become one of the greatest of all-time on the island."
