MacKenzie Phillips Admits to Sexual Relations with Her Father
The life of a rockstar can often be tumultous, filled with excessive drug use, wild parties, and general debauchery that is to be expected from such a high-profile profession. While this often leads to problems in the rockstar's own life, the most tragic effects are when the rockstar's party-hard lifestyle translates over into their family.
Case in point: MacKenzie Phillips. A former child star, MacKenzie Phillip's own life has been marred by arrests and drug use. She is also notably the daughter of John Phillips, founder of the iconic 60's pop group The Mamas and the Papas.
On "The Oprah Winfrey Show", MacKenzie confessed that she first tried cocaine when she was 11. It was apparently her father who introduced her to the contraband substances. John Phillips was the one who taught her to roll joints and was responsible for injecting her with cocaine.
Drugs aside, the most troubling aspect of her life can be attributed to him as well: incestuous sexual relations.
Phillips has stated that when she was a teenager her father raped her. She describes how this ultimately led to a 10-year relationship that expanded beyond typical father-daughter dynamics. Their "relations" ended when MacKenzie receieved an abortion after fearing that her father was the one responsible for the child.
In her recent book on her life exploits, "High On Arrival, Phillips states that when she was 19, she "woke up that night from a blackout to find [herself] having sex with [her] own father." What's more, this was all on the night before her wedding.
Although Phillips maintains that the sexual relationship was consentual, it was nonetheless an "abuse of power" and an act of "betrayal."
John Phillips is since deceased, but Phillips notes that she was able to forgive him on his deathbed.
In an empowering statement, MacKenzie Phillips projects that "she can't be the only one this has happened to. Someone needs to put a face on consensual incest."
