Madea Rules the Box Office . . . Again

Box office numbers are in!

The weekend estimates are in and Tyler Perry's Madea Goes to Jail has come out on top for a second week in a row. According to box office tracking Web site Box Office Mojo, the Tyler Perry film grossed an estimated $16.5 million, adding up to a $65 million total gross. The film has only been out for two weeks and has already become Perry's biggest hit. His next largest grosser was Madea's Family Reunion, which made just more than $63 million in 2006.

In second place was the 3-D concert film, Jonas Brothers: The 3D Concert Experience, which grossed a disappointing $12.7 million. According to movie Web site JoBlo, Disney was expecting numbers similar to the Hannah Montana 3-D concert movie, which made more than $31 million last year. All the same, Disney defended the Jonas Brothers movie's box office numbers by reminding us it was still the second biggest concert film to date.

The Oscar resurgence was evident with third place film, Slumdog Millionaire, which, after sweeping the Oscars last week, made $12.1 million this weekend. That leads to a total of $115 million domestically, a considerable sum for the film since it only cost $15 million to produce. The film held strong even after news of the beating of one of the child stars by his father, which was captured on camera in India.

Rounding out the top five are Taken, which is still holding strong at a little less than $10 million and He's Just Not That Into You, which made nearly $6 million. That means a total of approximately $108 million and $78 million for each film, respectively.
