Madonna Concert Stage Collapses

The roof a concert stage in France collapsed, killing one.

One person is dead and six injured after a portion of Madonna's "Sticky and Sweet" stage set collapsed Thursday in Marseilles France, People magazine reports.

The accident occurred during construction of the stage for Madonna's show at the Velodrome Stadium when the partially built roof accidentally caved in.

Police and fire officials closed the stadium to rescue those still trapped. The concert planned for Sunday, July 19, has been cancelled, BBC News reports.

The exact cause of the accident is unclear. According to Marseille city councilor Maurice Di Nocera, the roof collapsed gradually, allowing several people to get out before being hit. Two of the injuries were serious.

The identities of the dead and injured were not immediately released.

Madonna released a statement through her spokesperson Liz Rosenberg.

"I am devastated to have just received this tragic news," the singer said. "My prayers go out to those who were injured and their families along with my deepest sympathy to all those affected by this heartbreaking news."
