Madonna Gets OK from Court to Adopt
The trend of celebrities adopting orphans from foreign countries continues with Madonna winning the fight to adopt a daughter from Malawi.
The pop singer has legally won the right to adopt Chifundo "Mercy" James, 3, ruled by the Malawi Supreme Court of Appeal. "In our view, Chifundo James would be better taken care of if she was adopted by foreign parents who will give her love and affection. We therefore grant the adoption," Chief Justice Lovemore Munlo said.
According to People Magazine, preparations are being made to bring the South African orphan to America. "I am extremely grateful for the Supreme Court's ruling on my application to adopt Mercy James. I am ecstatic. . . . My family and I look forward to sharing our lives with her," Madonna said.
Madonna first met Chifundo "Mercy" James in October 2006 at the Kondanani Children's Village in Blantyre, Malawi.
