Madonna Wants to Adopt Another Child from Malawi
Madonna can't seem to get enough of two things: controversy, and kids from Malawi. The 50-year-old Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee is expected to visit the small African nation in the next few days with her first adopted son, David, to pursue another adoption.
Reuters reported that David's adoption was opposed by some Malawians who accused the government of bypassing adoption laws that require non-residents to live in the country for at least one year before adopting. A Malawian newspaper quoted Madonna as saying that her Malawian friends told her that David needed a brother or sister, leading her to want to adopt another. She has said she would do so only with the support of the Malawian people.
According to Entertainment Weekly, a Malawian court will review Madonna's request to adopt a 14-month-old girl named Mercy James from the same orphanage that housed David. An official at the ministry of Gender and Child Development said, "We finished the assessment yesterday in readiness for the courts next week."
During her expected visit, Madonna will visit the site where a multi-million dollar school for girls will be built. The school is funded by her charity, Raising Malawi.
