Malcolm X Killer Gets Parole

After 16 denials, Thomas Hagan, a man convicted of killing civil rights leader Malcolm X, will be out on parole next month.

The final man out of the three who were imprisoned for the murder of Malcolm X will be out on parole in late April after 17 attempts before the New York State board.

Thomas Hagan, 69, was granted parole on March 3, though he was serving time in prison part time for the past 20 years through a work release program. This allowed him to finish his sentence while working and spending time with his family.

His parole grant comes 45 years after the assassination of Malcolm X in the Audubon Ballroom in New York City.

Hagan used to be an active Nation of Islam member and was the only one of the three men arrested for the murder who confessed, saying in a 1977 affidavit that Malcolm X was a “hypocrite.” Muhammed Abdul Aziz and Kahlil Islam repeatedly professed their innocence and received parole in 1985 and 1987 respectively.

“I’ve been incarcerated for 40 years, and I’ve had a good record all around,” Hagan said to The Post. “I don’t see any reason for holding me.”
