Man Angry at Hitler Won't Be Charged
The 41-year-old man who tore off the head of a waxwork Adolf Hitler at the new museum in the German capital will probably not have to pay for damages because he is destitute, reported Reuters.
He scuffled with guards after leaping over a rope barrier before he tore the head from Hitler just minutes after Madame Tussauds opened last week. The waxwork Hitler was worth 200,000 euros and was removed for repairs. A spokeswoman for Berlin's Justice Ministry, Katrin-Elena Schoenberg, said, "It is not possible to seize anything from anyone with a monthly income of under 985 euros," reported Reuters.
The museum plans to return the Nazi ruler's waxwork as soon as possible, once experts have restored the damaged head. The man who tore the head from the exhibit was arrested, but later released and placed under investigation for bodily harm and willful damage to property, and said he was angry with the exhibit. He apparently made the attack to win a bet, according to Reuters.
Some 62 percent of Germans were in favor of returning the Hitler waxwork and 35 percent were against it, according to an opinion poll on Saturday. There was a storm of protest in Germany where Nazi memorabilia is generally banned. The display was regarded as tasteless and inappropriate in a place known for light-hearted entertainment, because he was the man who started the world war and exterminated Europe's Jews, reported Reuters.
