As Many as 300 Schools Containing 257,000 Students in Florida Placed on Lockdown

Captain Dan Rakofsky of Pembroke Pines Police Department believes all children and school administrators are safe

As many as 300 schools in Florida’s second-largest county, which has nearly 257,000 students, have been placed on lockdown Wednesday in response to a phone call from an unidentified woman who warned that her husband intends to go to a school and open fire, the Associated Press reports.

An earlier email from an unidentified individual, who may have been the man in question, said, “Something big will happen at a government building.” Captain Dan Rakofsky of Pembroke Pines Police Department has announced that authorities deemed the threat as “credible,” prompting the security measures that have been initiated.

The man’s wife called the radio station soon after to warn that her husband was capable of taking action and ask that the station attempt to influence him not to do anything.

“Initially we received information on a threat from a local radio station indicating a woman had called in to say her husband was going to show up at a school in Pembroke Pines and start shooting,” Rakofsky told reporters, according to ABC News.

Authorities have yet to identify the husband or the wife, but they are currently following several leads. Nervous parents have showed up at schools in Broward Country upon learning of the lockdown, but Rakofsky is confident that all of the children and school administrators are safe.
