Mariah's Hong Kong Show Gets Axed

Promoters cancel the upcoming concert due to the "unreasonable demands" of Carey's management.

The Adventures of Mimi are coming to an end sooner than expected.

The final stop on Mariah Carey's international concert tour was cancelled two days before its Oct. 28 show date. Carey was set to perform at Hong Kong's Tamar Site when concert promoters, One Events, pulled the plug on the show.

One Events says the concert was cancelled because of low ticket sales; only 4,000 tickets were sold at the 20,000-seat venue. The promoters also blame Carey's management for making outrageous demands.

"She deeply regrets the disappointment caused to them, due to unforeseen circumstances beyond her control," One Events said in a statement on its Web site. "For Mariah, this is particularly unfortunate given her recent sold-out, critically acclaimed tours of the United States and Japan."

However, Carey's management, Handprint Entertainmen,t says it called off the show because One Events failed to pay a contractual advance.

"Judging by the business model of this company and the way it does business - bearing in mind this money was still outstanding two days before the show - we felt the possibility of getting those fees was remote," Handprint co-owner Benny Medina tells Billboard.com. "So we felt we had no alternative but to cancel the show."

In the meantime, Universal Music South East Asia has made a more neutral statement, citing "unfulfilled contractual obligations by concert organizers."

The Grammy-winning singer's tour began this summer in Miami and played several dates across the U.S. before kicking off the Asian leg this month.

Carey's last record "The Emancipation of Mimi" was the best-selling CD of 2005 and earned her two #1 singles and three Grammys. A new album is due next year.
