Mary J. Blige to win ASCAP award

Blige honored with the "Voice of Music" Award.

The American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers really likes Mary J. Blige. The organization announced today their decision to award the R&B singer with the Voice of Music Award.

Blige has been well received in the music world, winning three Grammys, honors from the American Music Awards, Billboard Music Awards, and MTV Video Music Awards, among others. This latest award will be presented June 25 at ASCAP's 20th-anniversary Rhythm & Soul Music Awards.

ASCAP president Marilyn Bergman explained the reasons Mary was chosen. "Mary J. Blige is not only the 'Queen of Hip-Hop Soul,' but also a guiding light," she said. "Through all of her struggles, she was determined to find and maintain her own musical voice."

Blige will share the honor with past recipients Garth Brooks, Kenny Chesney, and Jimmy Webb.
