Check your local television listings Monday, Jan. 16 for a once in the lifetime special, Betty White's 90th Birthday: A Tribute to America's Golden Girl. The cast of The Mary Tyler Moore Show (with a few exceptions) have announced that they will join in the celebration of an incredible life. Mary Tyler Moore, Ed Asner, Gavin McLeod and Valerie Harper have made plans to be on hand when a whole host of celebrities celebrate the life of Betty White.
Betty White’s career spans the history of television in America from television’s humble beginnings in 1945 and 1949, through its first ‘Golden Age’ during the 1950s, little seen during the sixties though a delightful semi-regular on games shows such as Password and The Match Game, Betty White’s career came roaring back to prime time in 1973 when she brought to life the memorable character Sue Ann Nevins on The Mary Tyler Moore for 44 episodes.
At an age when most people contemplate retirement, Betty White’s career jumped into hyper drive. Her character Rose Nylund, introduced on The Golden Girls in 1985 holds the distinction of appearing on four shows, the others were The Golden Palace, Empty Nest, and Nurses. The four aforementioned shows were but a few of the many shows that have been blessed with Betty White’s talent, it is entirely possible that she holds a record for the most appearances by anyone in a variety of roles on television.
Alas none of White’s co-stars from The Golden Girls have lived long enough to celebrate her 90th birthday, but her current co-stars from Hot In Cleveland will be on hand. Valerie Bertinelli, Wendy Mallick and Jane Leeves will join in the fun along with Carol Burnett, Amy Poehler, Hugh Jackman, Jay Leno William Shatner, and Joel McHale.
According to Reuters, "NBC also promises ‘special musical performances, surprise appearances and comedy, featuring the irreverent tone, spirit and energy that is the hallmark of Betty’s six-decade career in show business.’"
Betty White's 90th Birthday: A Tribute to America's Golden Girl will feature a preview of Betty White’s newest show biz endeavor, a hidden camera show, Betty White’s Off Their Rockers.
Though the show will air on Jan. 16, White’s true birth date is Jan. 17, either way her star sign is Capricorn, known for energy, loyalty and dedication to a strong work ethic, which is a perfect explanation for this quote from The Huffington Post, "White has a simple birthday wish. ‘Just to keep things going as they're going now. It's one of the highest spots of my life.’"
