Material Girl Vogues Her Way into Rock and Roll Hall of Fame
Rock and Roll Hall of Fame celebration inducts Madonna-along with Leonard Cohen, John Mellancamp, The Dave Clark Five and The Ventures-into its esteemed ranks on Monday.
The 49-year-old singer began her career in 1982 with the release of her single, "Everybody." Her second album, Like a Virgin, shot her into the pop music stratosphere with hits that have remained referential. "Material Girl" is still the anthem of materialism, and the titular song still resonates as the anthem of ironic sexual rebellion.
Singers can be inducted into the Hall of Fame 25 years after their first recording, and a group of 600 music experts choose which artists in particular to induct each year. The honor includes being featured in the museum's Hall of Fame exhibit and the implementation of a computerized jukebox with all of the singer or group's songs adjacent to three movie screens displaying their music careers.
The 23rd induction ceremony for the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame will be held in New York.
