Matt Damon Lending His Celebrity

The actor visted with refugees while in South Africa making a film.

Bourne Identity actor Matt Damon met with refugees from Zimbabwe in Musina, South Africa. The actor visited refugee centers as part of his work with Not On Our Watch, a human rights group he started with other celebrities, including fellow Ocean's Eleven actors Brad Pitt and George Clooney, to help gain attention and aid for areas that may be suffering.

According to thehuffingtonpost.com, Damon was "shocked and saddened" by the refugees' tales, as he told the Associated Press in an interview.

Due to economic collapse and poor conditions, roughly 3 million Zimbabweans have fled. Many are forced to cross the dangerous Limpopo River, inhabited by swarms of crocodiles. They are forced to reach South Africa through holes in the fence along the border, giving most of their money to untrustworthy guides.

The actor is in South Africa making a film with Clint Eastwood and Morgan Freeman, who plays the country's first African-American president, Nelson Mandela.

Damon visited a makeshift camp inhabited by 5,000 people, where trash and personal belongings were strewn around, and where toilets and taps were few and far between. The actor called the situation "untenable," and firmly believes that change needs to happen soon.

The actor hopes that he can use his celebrity to bring awareness to the region and its problems.
