Mattel's "View-Master" Toy Hits Big Screen
Kids' toys are making a comeback. Whether it's bringing Transformers to life on the big screen or giving action heroes of the '80s full length feature flicks, the money lies with our childhood toys and Saturday morning television shows.
Next in the way of '80s kid culture to movie screens is, unbelievably, the View-Master, according to the Hollywood Reporter. The little plastic binoculars, with matching discs that revealed 3-D book scenes and far away destinations at the click of a Mickey Mouse ear-shaped lever, are set to become a million dollar movie production.
Fox's "Fringe" writer, Brad Caleb Kane, is in talks with DreamWorks to write a completely original story centering on the Fisher-Price gadget. So far, the exact plot of the film hasn't been released, but "Transformers" producers Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci have been asked to unleash their genius on the somewhat speculative film.
DreamWorks isn't the only company scraping for ideas from symbols of childhood. Universal has also recently acquired the right to the Atari video game, "Asteroids," for movie development and are also in the process of developing ideas around the board games, "Battleship" and "Candyland."
