Mayweather-Marquez Strikes Gold
Last Saturday's fight on pay-per-view between Floyd "Money" Mayweather Jr. and Juan Manuel Marquez got 1,000,000 buys.
The Associated Press reports that last Saturday's bout between Floyd "Money Mayweather Jr. and Juan Manuel Marquez was purchased on pay-per-view over 1 million times, HBO Sports announced Friday. While an impressive figure, it does not come close to the record 2.44 million buys for the Mayweateher vs. Oscar De La Hoya fight in 2007.
According to SportingNews.com, having fewer pay-per-view fights in each in boxing is beneficial to the sport, as it makes the fights less common and thus people get more hyped for them. USA Today states that although pay-per-view sales for the fight did well, tickets sale did not. The fight, which took place at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, sold 12,000 tickets, with nearly 2,600 tickets unsold.
