Meryl Streep has played many iconic roles including famous chef Julia Child, Baroness Karen Blixen, and a devilish director of a fashion magazine. Now, she’ll be taking on one of the most famous women of the United Kingdom when she plays Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher in The Iron Lady.
People reports that the biopic will focus on a specific period in Thatcher’s life, specifically, the time around the Falklands War in 1982. Streep has accepted the role as a challenge and has expressed her enthusiasm to convey what a marvelous woman Thatcher is.
Though Streep is no doubt a big name star to play this powerful British woman, it’s not the first time that someone has taken on the role. The Mirror reports that several other actresses have played Thatcher in productions.
The film is set for a 2011 release date in the United Kingdom.
