Sergio Vega, a Mexican singer who sang about Mexican drug wars, was shot and killed in his car on Saturday. Vega was on his way to perform a concert.
Earlier on Saturday, Vega spoke with La Oreja in order to confirm that he was still alive after rumors had been spread that he had been killed. “It’s happened to me for years now, someone tells a radio station or a newspaper I’ve been killed, or suffered and accident. And then I have to call my dear mum, who has heart trouble, to reassure her,” he said.
Hours later, on the way to his concert, Vega was gunned down by the Sinaloa cartel. Gang members opened fire on Vega’s red Cadillac, which caused him to lose control of the car. According to the newspaper El Debate, the gunmen “finished [Vega] off” with shots to the head and chest.
According to BBC, musicians who focus on the drug issues in Mexico have become targets for the violent drug gangs. In the past three years, at least seven musicians have suffered similar fates as Vega.
