Michael Douglas Discusses His Throat Cancer Diagnosis

Douglas appeared on 'Late Show with David Letterman' Tuesday

Actor Michael Douglas recently sat down with David Letterman, and announced that he had begun treatment for Stage 4 throat cancer, and was optimistic that he will recover from it.

Douglas appeared on CBS's Late Show with David Letterman to promote his upcoming film, Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps, and said that he received the diagnosis earlier in the summer, after he saw several doctors for a persistently sore throat.

When Letterman asked about the severity of his condition, Douglas replied, "The big thing you’re always worried about is it spreading, so I am head and neck. I am above the neck, so nothing’s gone down, and the expectations are good."

Douglas, 65, said that he recently completed his first week of an eight-week chemotherapy regime. Douglas also said that he both smoked and drank, and added, "This particular type of cancer is caused by alcohol and drinking."

When Letterman asked about Douglas' chances for recovery, he replied, "The percentages are very good. I would hate to say, but right now it looks like it should be 80 percent, and with certain hospitals and everything, it does improve."

Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps hits theaters on Sept. 24.
