Michael Jackson will soon be returning to theater screens, but not in a concert film. According to a report, Monticello Picture Company is talking to one of the executors of Jackson’s estate to produce a film.
Tom Pollack, who runs Monticello with director Ivan Reitman, told Variety, which first broke the story, that he is working to make a film covering various points of the "King of Pop’s" life. However, Pollack did stress that the deal has not been finalized. Also, a spokesman for the estate would not confirm the report.
Hollywood has been looking at turning Jackson’s life into a film almost immediately after he died in June 2009, The Guardian notes. At one point, rumors in 2009 had Jamie Foxx and Johnny Depp playing Jackson at different points in his life in a film. Depp said then that he “never ever thought of playing Michael Jackson in a film.”
If the report is true, the film is not likely to get off the ground any time soon. The estate is currently focused on the Cirqu du Soleil show, Michael Jackson: The Immortal World Tour.
Jackson last appeared on the screen in Michael Jackson’s This Is It, Sony’s documentary on the rehearsals for Jackson’s ill-fated comeback shows in London. The film made $72 million at the box office domestically, according to ABC News Radio.
Jackson’s personal doctor, Conrad Murray, was recently found guilty of involuntary manslaughter in the death of Jackson.
