Michelle Obama Pushes for More Toys for Needy Children
First Lady Michelle Obama visited a Toys for Tots warehouse near Marine Corps Base Quantico this Wednesday and pushed for more gifts. The program, started by the U.S. Marine Corps Reserve in 1947, annually delivers toys to needy children.
During the visit, in which more than 500 toys from the White House were delivered, Mrs. Obama noticed that while the bins for younger kids were overflowing, gifts for 11- to 14-year-olds were extremely lacking.
"If you're 11, you're still waiting for Santa, and you still want to make sure that they have something in the stocking," Mrs. Obama said. She then stated that she would continue shopping so that she could personally add to the toy-pile for older children.
Toys donated to the warehouse--including the six large sacks and two cardboard boxes Mrs. Obama brought with her visit--will be delivered to needy children throughout Virginia. The White House also contributed to another facility in a DC neighborhood.
Since its beginning, Toys for Tots has delivered more than 400 million toys to more than 188 million children in need.
