Miley Cyrus Says, "Be Who You Are"

The young pop star opens up about what her lyrics mean

The release of her newest album, Can’t Be Tamed, occurred this past Monday, and Miley Cyrus opened up to MTV News about why she writes the songs that she sings.

Cyrus told them that at the young age of 17, she feels more confident and sure of who she is than she has ever felt before. Can’t Be Tamed reflects the woman she sees herself growing into.

Earlier this morning on Good Morning America, Cyrus explained how difficult it could be to find yourself when everyone surrounding you is telling you who you think you should be.

“There’s so many people in your life telling you who you should and shouldn’t be,” she said. “And that’s what Tamed [is] about. It’s about being who you are to the fullest. And now I know who that is.”

Older songs the Disney star has released, such as “7 Things” and “The Climb,” show that her lyrics are more than cute ballads and party anthems. Cyrus says she tries to send out a message of empowerment to her female listeners with her lyrics.

“It’s just about freeing yourself from anything you think is holding you back. And I think that’s really important, especially for girls,” she told MTV News.

As Hannah Montana will soon fade away from Cyrus’ life, she believes that she should find what advice makes the most sense for her life.

She said, “Really think about what you want to do for the rest of your life. There’s a short amount of time, when you think about it, and no day needs to go by wasted.”
